Take a WALK with Daishawn “Jelly” Franklin

It’s been announced!

You’ve seen the flyers and the billboards around the city.

If you listen closely you can hear the footsteps getting louder. . .

Walk 7 is coming!

Hailed as the Midwest’s largest fashion event, WALK is easily the biggest fashion event to hit the city, if not the state. Having originated in Detroit, Michigan in 2009, Daishawn “Jelly” Franklin along with his business partner and co-producer, Crystal Bailey, have hosted over 6 editions of the show at lavish venues such as the historic The Detroit Opera House, The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, and the Detroit Rooster Tail. Several notable celebrities such as Dominique Reighard, Naima Mora, and Bianca Golden of America’s Next Top Model have all hosted this event in the past, with over 2,000 fashion-forward individuals coming out to see some of the hottest fashion the D has to offer.

In reading Jelly’s interview, not only will you get to find out what he considered fashionable when he was 16, but you will learn what has driven him to produce successful VIP events and concerts around metro Detroit area for the past 9 years.

16 Dreams: What year did you turn 16?

Jelly: I turned 16 in 1991.

16 Dreams: What high school did you go to?

Jelly: I attended Southfield High School

16 Dreams: When you were 16 did you have any nicknames? Do people still call you that now?

Jelly: At 16 I was called Jelly and still to this day I am still called Jelly as grown man LOL

16 Dreams: What do you miss most about being 16?

Jelly: At 16 things were much more care free I was a kid I didn’t have a job, nor did I need one. My concerns were school and sports. I miss not having to worry about nothing but school and sports.

16 Dreams: What was considered fashionable back then?

Jelly: Fashionable was Guess jeans, used jeans, Girbraud, Nautica, Tommy Hill, Polo, Jordan and Fila gym shoes. High top fades, girls wore bobs, and poetic justice braids

16 Dreams: Who is someone you look up to?

Jelly: I look up to President Obama the true definition of a loving husband and family man, very strong and making it seem effortless. In the entertainment Industry Jay-Z & Diddy. I think it is remarkable how they created succesful businesses starting from “rap” which was considered a trend and now successful moguls in fashion, music, several other business ventures.

16 Dreams: What propelled you to start the WALK?

Jelly: “Walk” Fashion Show was created by my partner Crystal Bailey and myself Daishawn Franklin “Jelly”. Crystal was a career model and I came from the promotions and entertainment world. We have a child in common and when she was carrying the child she decided to work more on the business side of fashion so we began to do fashion shows. Our 1st show was in a club and we named it “Upgrade” it was crowded no seating, standing room only. From there we went on to do several shows some successful and others not so much. The brand “Walk” was created after taking our daughter to see Elmo and seeing a skit teaching kids when to “Walk” across the street. We have since in 2009 branded “Walk” as our show. We are extremely passionate about what we have created. It is such a joy to create such a large platform for area models, designers, entertainers, photographers, stylist, and more. It is great to see the magnitude of networking and positive energy this event brings to our city. To see an idea that was once on a piece of paper come to life it very fulfilling.

16 Dreams: Who is your favorite designer and why?

Jelly: Diane Berry is my favorite designer. Just when you think she can not out do what she has previously shown in shows, she returns with even more creative and extravagant designs. Not to mention she is extremely humble.

16 Dreams: What are your plans for the future?

Jelly: Future plans for “Walk” is to grow the show here in Detroit to a nationally recognized event that people travel from all over the world to attend to see the true talent we have right here at home. We also plan to go on the road and tour with Walk Fashion Show providing this same quality platform for other cities in need of this similar stage. However, home is home and Detroit will always big the big show, the main event.

16 Dreams: What advice would you give someone trying to break into the business?

Jelly: The 1st advice I would give is to have faith. You have to believe in what you are doing. Do what you love and the money will come.
